Iran has been home to some of the world’s oldest civilisations, with the first recorded being that of the Elamite kingdoms in the fourth millenium BC. In the sixth century BC the Achaemenid Persian Empire was founded and became a superpower, being one of the largest empires in history. It fell to Alexander the Great in the fourth century BC before rising as the Parthian Empire in the third century BC. From the third century AD the Sassanid Empire ruled over the region until its conquest by Arab Muslims in the seventh century AD. Several dynasties emerged during this period, however none were successful in defending incursions by the Seljuk Turks and Mongols. By the fifteenth century, native Safavids established a unified Iran, and the country grew across several sectors. In the nineteenth century territorial losses threatened its stability, and by 1979 widespread desire for change saw the Iranian Revolution overthrow the last shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, overthrown.
